Colonel-General Gaidenko never touched alcohol in his entire life
Severe cardiac pathology caused the death of one of the most eminent centenarians near Moscow – Colonel-General of Aviation Ivan Dmitrievich Gaidenko. The hero of the Great Patriotic War died on Tuesday morning in his apartment in Korolyov near Moscow at the age of 105.
For his relatives, colleagues and friends, Ivan Dmitrievich has always been a role model, especially with regard to commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Throughout his life, the veteran never touched alcohol, did not smoke and went in for sports: athletics, swimming and tennis. But, perhaps, the man received the greatest hardening in the ranks of the Red Army, where he began to serve in 1938 after graduating from the Odessa Military Aviation Pilot School.
During the Finnish war, he made 28 sorties on a reconnaissance aircraft, and during the Great Patriotic War he served in a bomber regiment. At the end of 1942, his plane was shot down, and the pilot received a severe spinal injury. The rehabilitation of Gaidenko was long, and therefore he was removed from combat work. The pilot had to engage in educational activities for a while – to prepare young pilots for flights. And yet in 1944 he managed to return to the front. During his last military operation, participating in the defense of the Arctic, he shot down the leading German bomber. By the way, during the period of military service, the outstanding pilot mastered 60 types of aircraft, and in peacetime until his resignation in 1987 he was Deputy Chief of the Air Force General Staff for flight service.
