“One in a million”: an American woman with two uteruses gave birth twice in two days

An unusual birth took place in the United States: a woman from Alabama with two uteruses gave birth twice in two days.

Thirty-two-year-old Kelsey Hatcher gave birth to healthy daughters after 20 hours of labor one day apart – each twin has a separate birthday, writes The Guardian.

An Alabama mother with a rare bifurcated uterus has given birth to twins, the hospital where she was treated said Friday.

In what doctors call a “one in a million” pregnancy, 32-year-old Kelsey Hatcher gave birth to twin daughters, one in each womb, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital.

Kelsey Hatcher – after twenty hours of labor – gave birth to a baby girl named Roxy Layla on Tuesday and her second daughter, Rebel Laken, on Wednesday, she announced on social media.

“Never in our wildest dreams could we have planned a pregnancy and birth like this… but the safe delivery of our two healthy girls has always been our goal, and UAB has helped us achieve this,” Hatcher was quoted as saying in a hospital press release .

“Still, it seems fitting that they had two birthdays. They both had their own “homes” and now both have their own unique birth stories,” said the happy mother.

Hatcher was first diagnosed with uterine didelphys, or a double uterus, at the age of 17. This disease is a rare abnormality of the uterus, observed in only 0.3% of women, notes The Guardian.

The latest birth is Hatcher’s fourth pregnancy. Previously, she only gave birth from one uterus at a time.

A few weeks into her last pregnancy, Kelsey noticed bleeding and scheduled an ultrasound because women with double uteruses have a higher miscarriage rate.

During the appointment, doctors discovered that Hatcher was developing an extra fetus in the left side of her uterus.

“As soon as she moved the wand into the other uterus, I gasped,” Hatcher said in a hospital press release. – Of course, there was another child there. We just couldn’t believe it.”

Kelsey Hatcher told NBC News in November that her husband, Caleb, almost didn’t believe her given the rarity of her pregnancy.

“He said, ‘You’re lying.’ I said, ‘No, I’m not lying,'” Hatcher told NBC.

Hatcher’s team described her pregnancy as “normal,” except for a few extra appointments and a birth plan to plan for every possible birth.

Hatcher’s labor was eventually induced at 39 weeks. When she arrived at UAB on December 19, her cervix was already dilated 4 cm on the right and 3 cm on the left.

Kelsey Hatcher required “twice as much monitoring and scheduling,” given her double uteruses, and twice as many hospital staff.

After laboring for hours, Hatcher gave birth to Roxy Leila vaginally and Rebel Laken by Caesarean section the next day.

“After such a long and crazy journey, it was important for the world to see both of my girls together for the first time,” says Hatcher.
