The Central Asian country may break its last year’s record for flower purchases
Kazakhstan is preparing for International Women’s Day. Flower imports were increased to 8,278 tonnes worth $61 million in 2023, well above the 2022 record of $46 million, the Office for National Statistics said. It is expected that this year may show higher numbers than previous years.
Currently, Kazakhstan imports flowers from 52 countries, mainly from Europe, South America and Africa. Ecuador is the main supplier, followed by the Netherlands, Kenya and Colombia. These countries are known for supplying roses, carnations, tulips, orchids and dahlias.
More than 1.3 thousand tons of flowers were imported to Kazakhstan in January-February 2023. Of the total volume of flowers imported into the country during the specified period, roses accounted for 799 tons. The second most popular flower was the chrysanthemum – 134 tons. The country also imported 35 tons of lilies worth. The remaining 376.8 tons were tulips, iris, hydrangea and others.
According to Energyprom, despite the increase in imports, flower prices in Kazakhstan increased in 2023. As of January 2024, prices rose by 8.2 percent, with the most noticeable increase observed in the city of Astana, Almaty and Karaganda regions. The smallest price increase was recorded in the city of Almaty.
Kazakhstan not only buys flowers abroad, but also grows them on its own. In 2022, the country harvested 17.6 million flowers in 13 regions. Almaty region led in production with 7.8 million flowers.
