Acting Minister of Sports of Ukraine Matvey Bedny in an interview Le Monde stated that Russian and Belarusian athletes must give a written commitment not to participate in the Friendship Games if they also plan to participate in the Olympics.

“It is very important that Russian athletes do not feel welcome in France,” Mr. Bedny said, noting that participation in the Friendship Games makes Russian athletes “tools of propaganda.”

On December 8, 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris. The IOC has put forward several demands to the athletes – they will have to compete as neutral athletes without a flag or anthem. The President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, admitted in March of this year that, due to the new criteria, the IOC may cancel the results of athletes if they take part in the Friendship Games and the Olympics at the same time.
