Scientists from Oxford University found in Denmark the oldest European hedgehog, who lived 16 years. This was reported in Animals magazine. It is noted that the previous record for life expectancy belonged to a hedgehog who was nine years old.

The experts analyzed the animals in order to study how their population is changing in Europe. In total, 697 carcasses of dead mammals were studied, among which three hedgehogs were found that lived for more than nine years.

The age of this mammal can be determined by the rings that form as bones slow down during hibernation. As a result, scientists found that the hedgehogs were 16, 13 and 11 years old.

It is noted that about a third of the individuals could not survive until 2023, and the rest lived for about two years.
