The oldest conjoined twins in the United States, Laurie and George (Dori) Chappelle, have died. This was reported on the Guinness Book of Records website.
Laurie and Dorie died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on April 7. The cause of death has not been announced. At the same time, they managed to live nine years longer than twins of this type ever recorded.
Laurie and Dory were born with their heads fused together. They shared blood vessels and 30% of the brain. In 2007, Dory, born female, asked to be considered male and took the name George.
George was a fairly successful country musician, Laurie worked in the hospital laundry. Also, George could not walk due to problems with his spine; he moved in a wheelchair with the help of his sister. Laurie was engaged but never married because her lover died in a car accident.
