Three-time world champion gymnast Oksana Chusovitina (pictured) is going to compete for a ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, which could be her ninth. As part of the Uzbekistan national team, the 48-year-old athlete went to Egypt for the first stage of the World Cup, which will be held from February 15 to 18. Based on the results of the four stages of the World Cup, the two best gymnasts in each discipline will receive Olympic licenses.
Chusovitina is the only gymnast in history to compete at eight Olympics. Born in Bukhara, the athlete represented the national teams of the USSR and Germany, and currently competes for Uzbekistan. In addition to the Olympic gold won in Barcelona in 1992 in the team tournament as part of a joint team, Chusovitina also won silver at the 2008 Games in Beijing in her signature event – the vault. At the World Championships, Chusovitina won a total of 11 medals – 3 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze. The last time she was among the medalists at these tournaments in Tokyo was in 2011, when, competing under the German flag, she became second in the vault.
The record holder for the number of participations in the Olympic Games is Ian Millar, a Canadian equestrian and show jumping specialist who competed ten times between 1972 and 2012. Three people participated in nine Olympics – the Austrian yachtsman Hubert Raudaschl, as well as two Soviet shooters – Afanasy Kuzmin and Nino Salukvadze, who later competed for Latvia and Georgia, respectively. In addition to Chusovitina, 13 more people competed at eight Olympics.
