The pumping of oil through the Druzhba pipeline was suspended due to damage to the transformer station after the strike on the territory of Ukraine, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said.
“According to the information we received in the morning, the Druzhba oil pipeline itself was not damaged, the infrastructure serving it was damaged, one transformer station, which sets in motion the funds necessary to provide electricity,” he said (cit. according to RIA Novosti).
According to Szijjarto, oil transportation through the Druzhba can be restored in the near future, after the repair of the infrastructure. However, “Transneft” reported that Ukraine does not plan to resume the transportation of oil through the pipeline today.
The day before, November 15, Transneft received notification from Ukraine about the suspension of oil pumping through the Druzhba pipeline to Hungary due to a voltage drop. After that, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban convened a meeting of the country’s security council in connection with the shutdown of the Druzhba oil pipeline and the missile incident in Poland.
Prior to this, the Ukrainian media and officials reported about explosions on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine. November 15 also happened an emergency shutdown of one of the power lines through which Moldova receives electricity from Romania, which led to massive power outages throughout the country.
The Druzhba pipeline was built in the 1960s. for the delivery of oil from the USSR to the countries of the socialist camp in Eastern Europe. It starts in the Samara region and passes through Bryansk, and then splits into two branches: northern and southern. The northern branch passes through Belarus to Poland, Germany and the Baltic countries, the southern branch passes through the territory of Ukraine to the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. According to Transneft, fuel exports via Druzhba to non-CIS countries in 2021 amounted to 35.9 million tons.
