Odessa City Council approved the dismantling of monuments to Catherine II and Alexander Suvorov

The Odessa City Council voted to dismantle the monuments to the Russian Empress Catherine II and commander Alexander Suvorov. The meeting was broadcast live on the City Council’s YouTube channel.
So, 43 deputies voted for the dismantling and transfer of the monument to Catherine II, 1 person did not vote. The dismantling of the monument to Suvorov was supported by 41 Odessa officials, three did not express their opinion. During the meeting, the deputy of the City Council Oleksandra Kovalchuk proposed to transfer the monuments after dismantling for temporary storage to the Odessa Art Museum.
Monument to Catherine II (“Monument to the founders of Odessa”) is a composition that includes sculptures not only of the Russian Empress, but also monuments to her associates – the founders of Odessa, Joseph de Ribas and Platon Zubov, the first architect of the city, Franz de Vollan, as well as statesman Grigory Potemkin . Catherine II ordered the founding of Odessa in 1794. The monument was created in 1900 according to the design of the Odessa architect Yuri Dmitrenko.
The discussion of the transfer of the monument began this summer against the backdrop of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine. In August, in an interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper, Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov said he opposed the demolition of the monument to Catherine II and was concerned about growing Russophobia.
However, on 5 November supported dismantling of the monument to Empress Catherine II. Trukhanov pointed to the results of voting on the Socially Active Citizen platform, according to which the majority of Odessa residents were in favor of moving the monument. The next day, preparations began in the city for the dismantling of the monument to Catherine II. On November 24, the Odessa executive committee approved the idea of transferring monuments to Catherine II and Suvorov.
