ISIS acknowledged the death of its leader on Wednesday and approved his successor.

Al-Furqan’s media affiliate released an audio message from an ISIS official announcing the death of its leader, who was appointed in March.

“I declare and mourn the Islamic State and the fighters of the almighty Islamic State, the (absence) of the Emir of the Faithful and Caliph of Muslims Abu al-Hasan al-Hashmi al-Qurayshi… he was killed fighting against the enemies of God,” spokesman Abu Omar al-Muhajjer said in a post published on Wednesday.

ISIS did not specify who and where killed the group’s commander.

The group has announced his successor, who is named Abu al-Husayn al-Husayni al-Quraishi. Not much is known about him, but the group described him as an “old fighter” without mentioning any details.

The late leader was appointed to ISIS in March 2022 after US President Joe Biden announced the death of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Quraishi during a military operation in northwestern Syria.
