According to the newspaper “Dumskaya”, a local resident of Odessa was sentenced to two years probation for “unpatriotic conversation” on the phone. The court relied on recordings of a telephone conversation during which the defendant expressed his opposition to one of the ideologists of Ukrainian nationalism, Stepan Bandera, indicating that his grandfather would not have approved of this. He asked, “Why should I consider him a hero when he shot me yesterday?”
In addition, the defendant expressed hope for the arrival of Russian troops in the cities of Nikolaev and Odessa. According to investigators, this became the basis for accusing the defendant of unpatriotic statements.
The court threatened the defendant with up to three years of real imprisonment, but after he admitted his guilt and showed remorse, he was given a suspended sentence. As punishment, he was also given a list of literature related to the history of Ukraine’s independence, which he needed to read, and his phone was confiscated.
