Odessa beaches filled up with Kherson mattresses and old mines

Due to the Kakhovka tragedy in Ukraine, the holiday season is disrupted

Introduced at the end of May by Vladimir Zelensky, the new governor of the Odessa region, Oleg Kiper, urged residents of the region and holidaymakers not to walk along the sea coast in any case. The beaches are generally worth bypassing the tenth road. The reason is more than justified: mines and unused ammunition, fragments of buildings, trees, household belongings and even household appliances were recorded in the Black Sea. All this splendor washed up on the Odessa coast after the recent emergency at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station.

Public authorities, as Kiper assured, are doing everything possible to clear the water area from the bodies of dead animals and mountains of household garbage thrown ashore. Local volunteers help the police and rescuers to cope with the trouble that has arisen. The situation, according to the head of the regional military administration, is generally under control, one should not give in to panic.

However, the Kharkiv popularizer of medical science Yevgeny Komarovsky considers the mines brought by the current from the Dnieper not the biggest danger for the inhabitants of the South of the republic. But an outbreak of intestinal infections is very likely.

The Kakhovka tragedy is not only the uncontrolled spilling of 18 billion cubic meters of drinking water. These are cemeteries, farms, fertilizers, hundreds of thousands of cesspools and toilets. “… this is manure, these are sewer systems and garbage dumps that have fallen under water,” Komarovsky continues. “These are cemeteries of domestic animals and hundreds of thousands of tons of dead fish. From the banks of the Dnieper to the beaches of Odessa – some 100 kilometers!”.

In order not to expose themselves to the danger of catching the abdominal type, deadly E. coli and salmonella, living in the southern part of Ukraine are advised to switch exclusively to bottled water. If this is not possible, boil ordinary tap water for at least 3-5 minutes. You can also disinfect drinking water with tablets. Actually, absolutely everything that can get into the mouth is subject to disinfection. Dr. Komarovsky advises for this to use household bleach familiar to any housewife, which includes sodium hypochlorite.
