NYT: US spy agencies were not monitoring Hamas
[ad_1]
According to the American newspaper The New York Times (NYT), US spy agencies have virtually stopped collecting intelligence about the plans of the Islamist group Hamas, believing that Israel is able to completely control the situation.
The story mentions that Israeli officials viewed Hamas as a regional, but not a global, threat. This view was shared in the United States, and American intelligence agencies allocated few resources to collecting information about the group. On the contrary, officials in Washington even counted on recruiting Hamas militants to obtain information about other terrorist groups that the United States considered a higher priority to combat.
Earlier, retired US General Robert Abrams said that the destruction of Hamas while protecting civilians in the Gaza Strip is almost impossible. This is a very difficult task that international and national security forces face when trying to deal with terrorist groups.
