As the New York Times reports, the Ukrainian military is forced to take a defensive position due to a shortage of both people and ammunition.
The newspaper notes that at the moment the Ukrainian military is faced with an acute shortage of artillery shells, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces also lack the necessary components for the repair and maintenance of armored vehicles.
One of the lieutenants of the Ukrainian Armed Forces admitted that they do not have enough funds and people for an offensive, and at present their main goal is to hold their current positions. According to the NYT, Ukrainian artillery units report that in some areas of the front, Russian forces are capable of firing five times more shells than the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
To cover the shortage of artillery shells, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are trying to use kamikaze drones, however, as Ukrainian Major Sergei Bets notes, they are not effective enough.
