The New York Times noted in its article that Saudi Arabia, in consultations with the United States, warned that an Israeli ground operation in the Gaza Strip would have “catastrophic consequences” for the entire Middle East.
The publication quotes the words of Senator Richard Blumenthal, who was in Riyadh as part of the delegation. He said Saudi Arabia had made it clear in recent contacts that it opposed the IDF’s incursion into the Gaza Strip.
“The Saudi leadership has expressed the hope that a ground operation can be avoided for reasons of stability,” Blumenthal said. He noted that Saudi officials had warned that an invasion of Gaza would be an “extremely harmful” event with consequences for the entire region.
The newspaper writes that against this background, Washington asked Israel to postpone the start of the operation.
