NYT: Intelligence data leak complicates US relations with allies

The leak of US documents on Ukraine has led to the complication of Washington’s relations with its allies, The New York Times reported. The newspaper writes about this after several leaks of classified information on social networks.
In particular, 100 confidential US documents were published on Twitter on April 7, including those related to Ukraine, the Middle East and China. It comes a day after senior officials in the administration of President Joe Biden spoke of an investigation into a possible leak of documents about Ukraine’s military plans, including a counteroffensive.
One of the slides from the materials, dated February 23, is marked as Secret/NoForn, which means that it is not intended for distribution to other countries. The anonymous 4chan forum, according to the NYT, also featured a map of the battles for Artyomovsk (the Ukrainian name is Bakhmut) and confidential slides of briefings on China, the Indo-Pacific region and the Middle East. Former senior Pentagon official Mick Mulroy said the leak was a “significant security breach.”
“The leak has already complicated relations between allies and raised doubts about the ability of the United States to keep secrets,” the NYT said in a recent publication. According to a senior Western intelligence official who read the documents, the publication could lead to a reduction in the exchange of intelligence information.
“Materials show that the United States is spying not only on Russia, but also on its allies,” the authors of the NYT article say.
