The American newspaper New York Times confirmed the authenticity of the video from the place of execution of Russian prisoners of war in Makiivka. According to the publication, the footage offers a “rare glimpse into one of the many horrifying moments” of the Ukrainian conflict. It is noted that the recording was compared with images from satellites, and the authors came to the conclusion that the shooting was carried out in Makiivka.
Speaking to the newspaper, Physicians for Human Rights medical adviser Rohini Haar said the “pools of blood” in the footage showed no effort was made to raise or help the POWs. Moreover, the expert stressed that the soldiers were lying on the ground, apparently unarmed, with their arms outstretched or behind their heads. According to Haar, they are considered “incapacitated or non-combatants”.
The New York Times also noted that, according to war crimes expert Iva Vukusic, the International Criminal Court prosecutor is likely to be looking into the episode given its resonance. Vukusic added that to conduct an investigation, it would be necessary to visit the place of execution, collect evidence and conduct post-mortem and forensic examinations, as well as study the actions of the Ukrainian military after the shooting. She stressed that the Ukrainian authorities have the opportunity to investigate and urged them to openly share their findings.
