Borrell called for the creation of transport corridors to Asia, bypassing Russia

The European Union should expand ties with the countries of Central Asia in order to create, in particular, new transport corridors to Asia, independent of Russia, wrote head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell in his blog.

According to him, Russia and China continue to play an important role in Central Asia, but it is “obvious” that the countries of this region want to “diversify their relations” and see the EU as a “preferred partner”.

“We must deepen our ties with the region and take advantage of the enormous potential it has to offer in terms of energy supplies, critical raw materials and new transport corridors independent of Russia,” Borrell said.

We are talking primarily about the Middle and Trans-Caspian transport corridors, he explained. EU investments in the region have amounted to more than 100 billion euros over the past decade, which far exceeds the investments of Russia and China, Borrell noted.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), declaredthat it is the countries of the Asian region that are the locomotive of world economic growth, which is especially important when serious changes are taking place in global politics and the economy: “The world is becoming truly multipolar, and Asia is playing a very noticeable, if not new centers of power. Russia, according to Putin, stands for the development of Asia and the creation of a space for “trade and investment cooperation.”
