Svetlana Pavlichenko, Candidate of Medical Sciences, nutritionist, cardiologist and executive director of the ANO NRC “Healthy Nutrition” told “Gazete.Ru”that the most harmful to the gastrointestinal tract are foods that are rich in sugar and lack dietary fiber, namely sweets and packaged juices, as well as red meat and meat products.
As the expert noted, the most dangerous for the gastrointestinal tract are products of deep processing, which contain various chemicals. According to Pavlichenko, soluble dietary fiber in the intestines is converted into a protective mucus that protects the intestinal walls from mechanical damage, and products of deep processing include refined carbohydrates without dietary fiber, which disrupt the digestive tract.
The nutritionist added that sweets and sugar are harmful to the gastrointestinal tract, due to the excessive consumption of which the balance of the intestinal microbiome is disturbed, in particular, the growth and reproduction of beneficial microflora is suppressed, and conditionally pathogenic microorganisms that can cause diseases under adverse conditions are fed. She also clarified that sugar causes fatty degeneration of the liver.
The specialist warned about the dangers of carbonated drinks and packaged juices containing high amounts of sugar. According to the expert, carbon dioxide in the composition of drinks masks cloying, while irritating the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines and causing flatulence. In addition, Pavlichenko pointed out the harm of red meat and its products for the gastrointestinal tract, as they increase the risk of malignant tumors of the intestine.
