Novosibirsk citizen arrested for arson of military registration and enlistment office accused of attempted treason

Ilya Baburin, a 23-year-old resident of Novosibirsk, was charged with attempted treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation with the application of Part 3 of Article 30 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), said project “Zone of Solidarity”. Earlier, a case had already been opened against him for organizing a terrorist attack (Article 205.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). According to investigators, Mr. Baburin “was looking for perpetrators to set fire to the buildings of military commissariats” on “the instructions of foreign customers.”

Ilya Baburin was detained in September 2022 on suspicion of organizing a terrorist attack. Later, he was also charged with involvement in terrorist activities (part 1.1 of article 205.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Now he is in jail. According to the “Zone of Solidarity”, on March 31, the investigator acquainted Mr. Baburin with the decision to initiate proceedings against him for attempted treason. There were no new episodes in the case, the reason for initiating the case was the organization of arson.

According to investigators, Ilya Baburin, trying to help the Azov battalion (banned in Russia) in “carrying out activities directed against the security” of Russia, organized an attempt to set fire to the building of the military enlistment office in Novosibirsk. The resolution also notes that Mr. Baburin opposed the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

“By these actions, I. N. Baburin committed a crime under Part 3 of Art. 30 and Art. 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – the commission by a citizen of the Russian Federation of deliberate actions directly aimed at providing other assistance to representatives of a foreign organization in activities directed against the security of the Russian Federation, ”the text of the decision is quoted by the Solidarity Zone.

Ilya Baburov faces life imprisonment. According to the information of the project, Mr. Baburov did not admit his guilt and refused to deal with the investigation. According to the “Solidarity Zone”, this is the first case of charges of attempted treason for organizing the arson of the military registration and enlistment office.
