Halep, the 2019 Wimbledon champion, failed a doping test at the US Open and has since been suspended from all events until further notice by the International Tennis Integrity Association (ITIA). As MK wrote earlier, on October 21 it became known that a banned substance “with an extremely low content” was found in the sample of the Romanian tennis player, handed over before the US Open. After that, on October 23, Nike, which specializes in the production of sports equipment, announced that it could terminate the contract with the winner of two Grand Slam tournaments due to a doping scandal. Because of this, Simona could lose $1.7 million a year. That is how much she received per season from cooperation with the concern.
Following the allegations of doping, the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), led by Novak Djokovic, issued a statement in support of Simona Halep.
“PTPA is committed to ensuring that Simona Halep, like all other female tennis players, receives a fair trial throughout the process. We will fight for her rights and try to push for transparency for all other tennis players,” the PTPA said in a statement released.
Such support has no doubt come as a relief to Halep’s fans after a lot of bad press about the tennis star in recent days.
Halep herself described the incident as one of the hardest fights of her life. She promised to clear her name and fight to the end.
