Norwegian prime minister reacts to Sweden’s NATO membership

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stere expressed confidence that Sweden’s accession to NATO will play an important role in strengthening the alliance and ensuring the security of the entire Scandinavian region. He wrote about this on Twitter.
On Monday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had agreed to submit Sweden’s bid to join the alliance to the Turkish parliament for ratification. This happened after a meeting between Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Turkish President in Vilnius. Erdogan’s consent was obtained as a result of an agreement reached at the meeting.
The Prime Minister of Norway welcomed this agreement and called it historic for Sweden, Norway, the Scandinavian region and NATO as a whole. He expressed confidence that the accession of the Scandinavian region to NATO will make the alliance even stronger and provide an increased level of security in the region.
Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Sweden needed not only to reform its laws, but also to take action to prove its approach to fighting terrorism before it could join NATO. He noted that the changes in the legislation do not make sense while the actions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, banned in Turkey, continue in Sweden.
