The President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Arkady Dvorkovich, in an interview with Kommersant, said that the world number one in the world ranking, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who held the world champion title for ten years and refused to fight for it last year, will be invited to the 2024 Candidates Tournament.

According to Mr. Dvorkovich, FIDE considers Magnus Carlsen a player who qualified for the Candidates Tournament thanks to his victory in the World Cup held in Baku this summer. In this competition next spring in Toronto, eight grandmasters will determine the future opponent of the current world champion, Chinese Ding Liren.

“Magnus has said more than once that he will not participate in the fight for the championship title. This is his position, which we respect. But at the moment he is a player who has qualified for the Candidates Tournament. And he, like everyone else, will be sent a contract to sign in January to perform there,” said Mr. Dvorkovich. If Carlsen refuses in Toronto, he will be replaced by Azerbaijani Nijat Abasov.
