No more than 11% of Russians understand the IT industry

The educational platform GeekBrains, together with VK, conducted a study among 1.2 thousand respondents aged 18 to 55 and came to the conclusion that the majority of Russians (80%) are confident in the need for everyone to understand IT to some extent, but about 11% really understand it. Over half know basic things about the IT industry, more than a third know almost nothing about IT.
Most often, Russians learn about technological innovations from articles in the media and videos on YouTube (38% each), a quarter of respondents indicated colleagues and relatives as a source of information from IT, and a fifth read industry publications. 15% watch documentaries about IT, 13% read IT bloggers, 10% listen to technology podcasts, and 10% read professional IT literature.
Every second person names technology as the most interesting topic in everyday life, about a third of Russians are attracted by news about the use of technology in medicine, about the same number are interested in using IT in industry. About half read only Russian media about IT, and a fifth – foreign ones. Over half of Russians show occasional interest in IT topics, and 17% study the issue on an ongoing basis. More than a third are sure that knowledge about IT will be useful to them in everyday life and work. Half would like to work in technology.
