In Russia, there have been no recorded cases of importation of the Western Equine Encephalitis Virus from Argentina, where 12 cases of infection with this virus were discovered. Rospotrebnadzor informs about this.
“….the situation is under control. Rosportebnadzor specialists are monitoring the situation at checkpoints across the state border,” the department’s press service said.
According to the Argentine Ministry of Health, 12 cases of infection of citizens with western equine encephalitis (WEE) were detected in the territory, one of the patients died. Many of the cases in Argentina are men between 30 and 72 years old, but the virus was also found in a 9-month-old child. All patients were hospitalized and received medical care.
Rospotrebnadzor explained that ZEL is a rare disease that is caused by a virus that spreads through mosquito bites. It most often infects horses, but can also be transmitted from animal to human.
