Niger rebels open borders with five countries

The military who carried out the coup d’état in Niger announced on national television the opening of borders with Algeria, Burkina Faso, Libya, Mali and Chad. About it informs Al Jazeera channel.

This applies to both air and land transport. The borders have been closed since July 26 after the military carried out a coup d’état in Niger.

On the same day, the rebels announced the removal from power of the President of Niger, Mohamed Bazum, and arrested him. A nationwide curfew was also introduced and the activities of all institutions of the republic were suspended. The rebels explained their actions by deteriorating security, economic and social problems. The UN Security Council later called on the rebels to release the country’s democratically elected president.

Commenting on the events in Niger, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow was “seriously concerned.” He noted that Russia stands for “the speedy restoration of the rule of law” in the country and “for restraint on all sides.”

Against the background of the coup d’etat in Niger, the authorities of France and Italy announced August 1 about the evacuation of its citizens from the country. Then the decision to evacuate its citizens from Niger accepted EU authorities. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the EU would suspend budgetary support for Niger and all security cooperation activities. At the same time, the commissions in charge of humanitarian assistance will remain in Niger and “will try to limit the negative consequences of the coup,” he added.
