The Council of the National Hockey League (NHL) approved the deal to sell Ottawa to Canadian businessman, 58-year-old Michael Andlauer. He bought a controlling stake in Ottawa for a record $950 million in NHL history, the publication reported. The Athletic.
The deal was closed on Thursday, September 22. The daughters of former Ottawa owner Eugene Melnik, Anna and Olivia, retained a 10% stake (their father died in 2022). An appeal from the new owner has already been published on the official Ottawa website. The previous record in NHL history was held by Fenway Sports Group LLC, which bought Pittsburgh for $900 million in November 2021.
The official presentation of the new owner of the club will take place on September 23, Friday, at a press conference. In circulation on website the new owner promised that under his management the club would achieve success. “On the ice, it’s all about being a winning team and the goal is to bring home the Stanley Cup. Off the ice, it’s about being inclusive, bringing the hockey community together, being best in class and being able to make a difference,” said the Canadian businessman.
Michael Andlauer is the founder and chief executive officer of Andlauer Healthcare Group Inc, which provides supply chain management and third-party logistics and specialty transportation solutions to the healthcare sector. Michael Andlauer previously owned the American Hockey League (AHL) club Hamilton (2004–2015). In 2007, Hamilton won the Calder Cup.
Since 1990, Ottawa has made the playoffs 16 times. The team was first in the division four times. In 2003, Ottawa took the President’s Cup, and in 2007 reached the Stanley Cup final. In the new season, Ottawa will have a new forward – Russian Vladimir Tarasenko.
After the death of Eugene Melnyk, when the club went to his daughters, nine bids were submitted to purchase Ottawa. The application was submitted by a group of investors led by Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds and real estate tycoon Christopher Bratty, a group of Los Angeles entrepreneur Neco Sparks, (it also included rapper Snoop Dog and actor Dwayne Johnson).
