The Spanish authorities have dropped all charges in the case of corruption and fraud in the transition of the Barcelona forward Neymar from the Brazilian Santos to the Spanish Barcelona. Earlier, Spanish prosecutors demanded two years in prison for Neymar and a €10 million fine.
The Spanish court has completed the consideration of the case of PSG striker Neymar. The representative of the prosecutor’s office said in court that he renounces all charges against the French club forward, his father, as well as the leaders of the Spanish and Brazilian clubs for which he previously played.
Prosecutors said in a statement that the decision to drop all charges came after former Barcelona presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Bartomeu testified. Prosecutor Luis Garcia said he did not see anything criminal in the acts of Neymar.
The case against Neymar was opened at the request of the Brazilian investment fund DIS, which claimed that the deal to transfer the football player from Santos to Barcelona was carried out according to a “gray” scheme.
In 2009, the investment fund acquired 40% of the transfer rights to Neymar, paying € 5 million for them. In 2013, when the footballer moved to Barcelona, she paid Santos more than € 80 million for him. The fund received its share from his transfer , it amounted to € 6.8 million. However, DIS considered themselves deprived and turned to law enforcement agencies.
According to the initial version of the investigation, approximately € 40 million passed by the Santos cash desk and migrated from the accounts of Barcelona to the accounts of the N&N group of companies controlled by Neymar’s father, who acts as his agent. However, as follows from the statement of the prosecutor’s office, these suspicions were not confirmed.
We add that the DIS investment fund does not agree with the verdict. Lawyers for the company said they would continue to seek criminal penalties for Neymar, as well as damages for the company, which they estimate at €34 million, and a fine of €195 million.
