The New Year in Moscow will start with frost. In the first days of January, meteorologists predict temperatures down to -25 degrees. However, on Saturday and Sunday, December 30 and 31, above-zero temperatures with snow and rain are expected in the capital. At the same time, hundreds of events are planned in the city during the holidays.
The weather will change on the night of January 1, said Alexander Golubev, an employee of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia: “Abnormally cold weather is expected after December 30. On Saturday the temperature by morning will be from 0 to -5 degrees. On the night of January 1, temperatures down to -8…-13 degrees are expected in Moscow and the region.

Those who planned to celebrate the New Year on the street need to significantly insulate themselves. At the same time, we believe that we should expect such real winter weather for Christmas as well.”
About 200 major events are planned in Moscow during the New Year holidays. You can meet 2024 in 21 capital parks, including Krasnaya Presnya, Sokolniki, Park named after. Gorky, Fili and the Hermitage Garden. VDNKh has also prepared a special program for residents and guests of the capital. As you go through various stages, you receive a postcard that can be exchanged for a Christmas tree ball, and at the final point, together with Father Frost and the Snow Maiden, you will decorate the main symbol of the coming year, that is, the dragon, which will shine at exactly midnight. There will also be performances by artists such as RASA, Enzo, Yulia Parshuta. Visiting is free, but you need to buy an entrance ticket to the skating rink.”
There will be about 50 New Year’s events in Moscow museums, including a Christmas tree at the Museum. Pushkin and the exhibition “Waiting for a Miracle” at the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve. And the press service of the park and museum complex in Tsaritsyn reported on the performance of popular artists: “We have a concert starting at 17:00 on December 31st. Various ensembles from the Department of Culture will perform until 20:00. Afterwards, the finalists of the “Voice” project and singer Zara will appear on stage. From January 1 to January 3 there will also be concert programs from 15.00 to 21.00.
On the first day of the new year, Valeria will perform with us, and Dmitry Malikov will perform on the 2nd. It is free for spectators; the concerts will take place directly above Palace Square. We also have two skating rinks and ski and tubing rentals. The museum itself is open until 18.00 from January 2. And after 18.00 we have cafes and restaurants on site.”
As part of the Journey to Christmas 2024 festival, creative groups will perform at 36 venues, as well as culinary and scientific master classes. More than 1.5 thousand matinees with Father Frost and the Snow Maiden will be held in Moscow. A large selection of entertainment is also offered in the Dream Island park, Kommersant FM found out:
“New Year’s programs will be held from December 29-30 from 15.00 to 19.00. December 31 – from 14.00 to 18.00 hours. From January 1st to 8th they will take place from 15.00 to 19.00. All this is planned on the territory of the leisure and entertainment center; admission there is free, without prior registration.
There will be quests, games, creative master classes, gift drawings, discos with balloons, and soap bubble shows.
For example, participants will have to fix the New Year’s gift factory by completing various tasks, solving puzzles, playing snow bowling, decorating Christmas trees, and so on. Every day there will be two creative master classes on creating Christmas tree decorations from felt and carnival masks with the symbol of the year. In addition, viewers will be treated to interactive puppet shows, and on January 1 and 2, visitors will be able to watch a spectacular chemistry show.”
In Moscow, public transport on New Year’s Eve will be free from 20.00 on December 31 to 6.00 on January 1. This schedule applies to the metro, MCC and ground transport routes. But the MCD, according to the capital’s mayor’s office, will only be open until 3.00.
From January 1 to January 8, parking on the streets of the capital is also free, except in areas with barriers. Driver control will also be strengthened during the holidays. The State Traffic Inspectorate will conduct raids to identify violators from the evening of December 29 until January 8.
In addition, the capital’s mayor’s office extended last year’s restrictions and canceled holiday fireworks. The townspeople, however, were not prohibited from setting off their fireworks, but were asked not to make too much noise. Mass celebrations and city fireworks were abandoned this year in Kaluga, Bryansk, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Chita, Voronezh, Kaliningrad, Belgorod, and St. Petersburg. The mayor’s office promised to send the saved money to the Ministry of Defense.
