New strain of HIV found in Cyprus

Scientists at the University of Cyprus have identified a new recombinant strain of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It was found in 14 inhabitants of the island. This was reported by the local newspaper Phileleftheros.
The new strain was named CRF91_cpx. Its genome consists of several strains of HIV: CRF02_AG, G, J and U. According to scientists, the new strain circulates among Cypriot men who have sex with men.
Scientists believe that it may continue to spread on the island. They also have not yet been able to identify all the symptoms of the new strain.
The virus was identified by University of Cyprus scientists Cicek Topku and Vasilis Georgiou, led by Professor Leontios Kostrikis and Dr. Brian Thomas Foley from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States.
