Astronomers have found three new satellites near Uranus and Neptune
The American Carnegie Institution reported that two new satellites have been found near Neptune. Another space object has been discovered in the orbit of Uranus.
The satellite of Uranus has been tentatively named S/2023 U1, but will finally be named after Shakespeare’s character. A space object with a diameter of about 8 kilometers orbits the planet in 680 days.
The orbital period of Neptune’s satellite S/2002 N5 is 9 years, length – 23 kilometers. For the S/2021 N1 satellite, these figures are 27 years and 14 kilometers. The satellites will be named after the Nereids from ancient Greek mythology.
The number of known satellites of Uranus has increased to 27, Neptune – to 14. Saturn and Jupiter have 118 and 92, respectively.
