“New People” withdrew the project to return direct elections of mayors in the Perm region

The leader of the “New People” faction in the Legislative Assembly of the Perm Territory, Denis Shitov, withdrew his signature from the opposition bill, which restored the opportunity to elect the head of the municipality in direct elections. In his address, which Kommersant has at its disposal, he stated that he did this “on the eve of a large-scale presidential campaign, when parties should work to consolidate Russian society.” However, Mr. Shitov added that he plans to return to this issue later.

In accordance with the regional law “On the procedure for considering, adopting and promulgating laws of the Perm Territory,” in the event of the withdrawal of the signature of one of the co-authors of the bill, the document is returned to the subject of the legislative initiative, Kommersant was told in the regional legislative assembly.

Let us recall that the initiative allowing direct elections of heads of municipalities of the Kama region (with the exception of Zvezdny ZATO) was submitted to the regional parliament this fall by the leaders of the opposition factions Anna Baranova (KPRF), Oleg Postnikov (LDPR), Veronica Kulikova (A Just Russia – For the Truth “) and Denis Shitov (“New People”). It was supposed to be considered at the November meeting of the Legislative Assembly.

The leader of the LDPR faction Oleg Postnikov confirmed to Kommersant that now the bill will not be considered by the regional parliament. According to him, the opposition does not yet intend to introduce any other similar initiatives.

Earlier, the heads of 25 municipalities of the Perm Territory prepared reviews of the draft law on the return of direct elections of heads of city and municipal districts. None of the heads supported the project.
