American video game developer NetherRealm posted the first trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 and announced a release date of September 19, 2023. Earlier, the founder of the studio, Ed Boon, repeatedly teased the new part of Mortal Kombat on his Twitter account. Mortal Kombat 1 is planned for release on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Versions for past generation consoles are not being developed.
The new part is both a soft restart of the series and a direct continuation of Mortal Kombat 11, released in 2019, in which one of the main characters of the series, Liu Kang, received the power to form a “new era”. In the trailer, you can see the familiar characters of the series: Raiden, Kung Lao, Shang Tsung (the character is a bonus to the pre-order of the game), Scorpion and Sub-Zero, as well as Kitana and Mileena. Beta testing is scheduled for August. The new part of Mortal Kombat breaks the previously established release cycle of games from NetherRealm: Mortal Kombat 1 comes out immediately after Mortal Kombat 11. Previously, Mortal Kombat games were released alternately with DC superhero projects Injustice.
