Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi played a draw with Indian player Vidit Gujrati in the second game of the fifth round of the World Chess Cup in Baku. This time Nepomniachtchi played with white pieces.
The first game also ended in a draw. The winner will be determined in a tie-break on Monday, August 14th. Due to the sanctions of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Russian chess players play in a neutral status. The men’s tournament will end on August 23 (with a tie-break – on August 24), the women’s – on August 20 (with a tie-break – on August 21).
The top three chess players will play in the Candidates and Contenders Tournament in 2024. The prize fund of the men’s tournament is $1.8 million, the women’s is $676,000.
