Nebenzya: Russia presented to the UN Security Council photographic evidence of shelling of Zaporizhzhya NPP by Ukraine

Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that Russia had distributed to the Security Council (SC) and the UN General Assembly photographic evidence of shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant by Ukraine. The broadcast was on the YouTube channel of the international organization.

“I want to show you a photo of the destruction on the territory of the ZNPP as a result of shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. We have a whole collection of such photographic evidence, we distributed it this morning as official documents of the Security Council and the UN General Assembly, ”he said, showing several pictures.

Nebenzya noted that since the last meeting of the Security Council on the ZNPP, the situation with nuclear safety at the plant has deteriorated greatly. The Permanent Representative once again stressed that Russia does not use the facility for military purposes and does not place heavy weapons on it.

The diplomat said that Moscow is ready to facilitate the arrival of the IAEA mission to the ZNPP. “We expect that the IAEA mission will nevertheless take place in the near future and the Agency’s specialists will be able to confirm the real situation at the station,” he added.

Earlier, the Russian side requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation at the ZNPP, which was held on August 23. The previous session, at the request of Russia, took place on 11 August. During the session, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, considered it absurd to accuse the Russian military of strikes on the ZNPP. He also stated that the demilitarization of the ZNPP would make it more vulnerable. At the same time, according to Dmitry Polyansky, Deputy Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, at the meeting no one supported the Ukrainian version of what is happening around the station.

In addition, the situation around the ZNPP will be discussed on August 24 at a meeting requested by Western states.

On August 16, it became known about the start of preparations for the second IAEA mission to ZNPP. According to Mikhail Ulyanov, permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, the preparations are still going slowly because of the vacation of the director of the agency, Rafael Grossi. August 23 Grossi declaredthat the mission could take place within a few days in case of successful negotiations.

Zaporozhye NPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper near the city of Energodar. Four days after the start of a special military operation in Ukraine, Russian troops took control of the station. Subsequently, Energodar and the nuclear power plant were repeatedly shelled by the Ukrainian military.
