NBC, citing two unnamed officials, reported that US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was not only hospitalized on January 1, but spent four days in the intensive care unit.
The report also notes that amid tensions in the Middle East, the head of the Pentagon had to transfer responsibilities to his deputy, Kathleen Hicks, the first woman in US history to be confirmed by the Senate to this post in 2021.
Earlier, Pentagon press secretary Patrick Ryder said that Lloyd Austin had already fully returned to his duties. However, he did not disclose the diagnosis of the 70-year-old minister.
