In Kazakhstan, former President Nursultan Nazarbayev was stripped of his status as head of the Supreme Board of Trustees of Intellectual Schools, the university and the foundation named after him. About it informs local edition “Kursiv”.
On June 29, the deputies of the Senate approved the relevant amendments to the law on issues of professional qualifications, state awards and education. They introduced a norm that deprived the former president of the status of chairman of the supreme board of trustees at Nazarbayev University, Nazarbayev Fund and Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools.
In the new wording of the law, the chairman of the supreme board of trustees of organizations is the president of the republic or the person he appoints. The regulation on the council will be approved by its chairman. At the same time, the deputies approved the norm, according to which decisions regarding grants for the education of gifted children will be made by the current president of Kazakhstan, and not Nazarbayev.
On June 5, 2022, a referendum was held in Kazakhstan to amend the Constitution. Then it was proposed to delete the article on the status, privileges and powers of the first president. The norm on the immutability of Nazarbayev’s status as the leader of the nation was also excluded. In February 2023, the current President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, signed a document repealing the law “On the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbasy.” After the repeal of the law, Nazarbayev no longer has the right to address the people and state bodies, participate in government meetings and speak before parliament with initiatives on state building, foreign and domestic policy, and the country’s security.
