Nazarbayev stripped of status of honorary senator of Kazakhstan

The first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, was deprived of the status of an honorary senator of the republic, since this title was excluded from the regulations of the senate (upper house of parliament). Maulen Ashimbaev, Chairman of the Senate of Kazakhstan, announced this.
“Considering that this was removed from the constitution [статьи о статусе и полномочиях первого президента страны]considering that the law [о первом президенте] is preparing to make him lose, we have removed the title of “honorary senator” from our regulations, ”he said, answering a question about maintaining the status for Nazarbayev (quote according to TASS).
Ashimbayev clarified that earlier the status of an honorary senator was assigned to only one person – the first president of Kazakhstan. He received this title in 2019.
The speaker of the Senate of the republic added that on January 13, the deputies of the parliament at a joint meeting of the chambers will consider the issue of recognizing the law “On the first president of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbasy (leader of the nation)” as invalid.
As a result of the constitutional reform, approved in a referendum on June 5, 2022, by the citizens of Kazakhstan, all references to the role and status of Nazarbayev were excluded from the Basic Law, including the title of “elbasy” – the leader of the nation. 10 January Constitutional Court of Kazakhstan acknowledged the law “On the First President” became invalid.
This document was adopted back in 2000. According to the law, Nazarbayev, his family members and property are inviolable. In particular, the first president of the republic and his relatives cannot be arrested and detained. The document contains a number of other privileges.
