The natural population decline in Russia in 2023 decreased by 17.4% compared to 2022 and amounted to 495.2 thousand people, it follows from data Rosstat. The data does not take into account statistical information from new regions – the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. In 2022, the natural population decline amounted to 599.6 thousand people.
The number of births over the past year decreased by 3.2%, to 1 million 264.9 thousand children, follows from Rosstat data. The number of deaths in 2023 decreased by 7.6%, to 1 million 760.2 thousand. The resident population of Russia as of January 1, 2024 amounted to 146.206 million people.
At the beginning of 2024 Rosstat introduced two variants of the demographic forecast for Russia until 2046: high and low. The optimistic version of the forecast assumes an increase in the Russian population by 4.59 million people, to 150.87 million, by the beginning of 2046. According to the pessimistic version, by 2046 the country’s population will decrease by 15.4 million and amount to 130.6 million people.
