NashStore aims at Yabloko – Kommersant FM

In Russia they want to create an application store for Apple gadgets. The developers of the NashStore service told Izvestia about this. It currently works for Andorid devices. Until March 7, the American corporation must allow applications not from the App Store to be downloaded to iPhone, but for now the option will only be available to users from the European Union. Apple was forced to make concessions due to the Digital Markets Act, which was passed in the EU to combat the dominance of tech giants.

How justified are the hopes that similar functions will soon become available in Russia? AppleInsider.ru editor-in-chief Renat Grishin believes that this will depend on legislators: “The European Union did not persuade Apple – they introduced a law that obliges them to do this. Apple itself will definitely not take the initiative, because it will hurt their wallet. It all depends on whether such a law will be adopted in our country. If so, then Apple will consider whether to launch a third-party store here or completely abandon the App Store in Russia. From the point of view of the purely business of an American corporation, of course, it is easier to agree. The process has been launched, and it will soon begin to work in many European countries.

At the same time, the launch of an alternative store does not mean that people will stop using the App Store. It will be years before even half of the apps are downloaded from an alternative store. If applications that harm the device begin to appear there, then the very concept of alternative stores will be called into question. In addition, you need to understand that Apple will also not stand still, watching how competitive applications develop. Perhaps the corporation will reduce the commission and allow alternative payment methods within the App Store with some conditions.”

Russian developers claim that regional restrictions can be bypassed, for example, if you select a different country in the settings. According to Kommersant FM’s interlocutors, it will be possible to gain access to alternative application stores from the European Union only after creating an account with a linked European card. Such functionality will not be available to Russian users for a long time, says IT expert, editor-in-chief of vilianov.com Sergei Vilyanov:

“Absolutely nothing happens on the Apple platform without Apple’s permission. And I think they won’t allow such a third party app store to be installed for a variety of reasons.

Plus, we must remember that these alternative stores have rather draconian rules, where you have to pay a commission to Apple for each download, even if the application is free.

It is absolutely unclear how to implement this mechanism in the current conditions, even if they somehow go through a third-party jurisdiction. There are examples; you can see how our banks operate, releasing applications from other countries under unclear names. But they all live, as practice shows, for a maximum of two or three days, after which Apple finds and destroys them. The same thing will happen in this case. Until legal mechanisms are created for the use of third-party application stores of Russian origin, they will all appear and disappear faster than snow in March.”

Apple promises to monitor the quality of applications in alternative stores, and the sites themselves will be carefully checked by the corporation.
