NASA’s Perseverance rover has found evidence of ancient lacustrine deposits left behind by water that filled a giant pool at Jezero Crater. This is evidenced in a study by scientists at the University of California at Los Angeles, which leads Reuters.
Scientists have imaged a 20-meter-deep section of the Martian surface in two dimensions using the RIMFAX rover’s radar. The layers of rock that were seen in the images indicate that the soil deposits appeared in the crater thanks to two lakes that fed it.
Presumably, the deposits were formed about 3 billion years ago. Scientists suggest that some areas of Mars may be covered in water with microbial life. After receiving the samples collected by the rover, scientists will conduct additional research.
NASA Perseverance landed on Mars in February 2021. In September 2023 NASA reported about the successful progress of experiments on the production of oxygen on Mars. During its stay on the planet, Perseverance launched the process of producing oxygen from carbon dioxide 16 times, resulting in 122 g of oxygen produced.
