A NASA spokesman during a live broadcast said that the specialists of the American space agency again proposed to postpone the launch of a super-heavy rocket into orbit of the moon, because they could not eliminate the leak of fuel during refueling.
“The launch team has made a recommendation not to launch,” the spokesman said.
Three times already, NASA engineers have tried to seal the eight-inch pipe that supplies liquid hydrogen to the tanks of the SLS launch vehicle with the Orion spacecraft on top. But unsuccessfully.
If the launch does not take place again on Saturday, it will not be possible to attempt a launch until Monday.
It is planned that the Orion flight will last 37 days, after which it will splash down in the Pacific Ocean. Three mannequins placed on the ship will visit the Moon’s orbit. They are equipped with sensors that will record the level of radiation and stress that living astronauts will experience in the future. During the mission, several small artificial satellites will also be launched from the spacecraft.
The Artemis-1 mission, within which the launch is being carried out, is a preparation for manned flights, the first of which is scheduled for 2024.
The Artemis program is equated in importance with the Apollo missions carried out by the United States in the 1960s and 70s. Its apogee was the landing of astronauts on the moon.
As part of the Artemis program, a crew landing on the moon is scheduled for 2025. The plans of the Americans to colonize the Earth’s satellite in the future.
