The famous composer Andrew Lloyd Webber announced the death of his eldest son. Nicholas Lloyd Webber has died 18 months after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has announced the death of his eldest son Nicholas, a 43-year-old composer who was recently transferred to a hospice as he battled stomach cancer, Sky News reports.
His Oscar-winning father said the family was “completely devastated” after his death on Saturday.
“I’m shocked to announce that my beloved eldest son Nick passed away a few hours ago at Basingstoke Hospital,” wrote Andrew Lloyd Webber on Twitter. “His whole family is gathered together and we are all completely inconsolable.”
Nicholas followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a composer and scoring for the BBC for the drama Love, Lies and Records, as well as a theatrical and symphonic version of The Little Prince.
Nicholas Lloyd Webber also produced his father’s symphony suites at the Theater Royal Drury Lane in London, and the couple’s musical theater album Cinderella by Lloyd Webber, released in conjunction with the show’s premiere in 2021, was nominated for a Grammy.
A year and a half ago, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.
Andrew Lloyd Webber said that the recent flare-up of his illness had left him “absolutely devastated”.
As a result, the 75-year-old actor, best known for such musicals as Cats, The Phantom of the Opera and Starlight Express, missed the premiere of Bad Cinderella at New York’s Imperial Theatre.
Stomach cancer – or gastric cancer – is when cells form in the lining of the stomach and grow abnormally. If cancer is detected at an early stage, it can be cured, notes Sky News. The British National Health Service says they include heartburn or acid reflux, trouble swallowing, feeling unwell, indigestion and feeling full very quickly. According to experts, in the UK about 6,600 people develop stomach cancer every year.
