Cancer: Hypertension and diabetes increase the risk of cancer

Scientists from China have found that diseases associated with metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, elevated sugar and cholesterol levels, excess abdominal fat) may increase the risk of developing certain forms of cancer. The results of their study were published in the journal Cancer.

The researchers analyzed data from 44,115 Chinese adults. The average age of the participants was 49 years. The researchers collected information about their health, measured their blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and measured their waistline, weight, and blood pressure.

Participants were divided into four groups depending on the severity of metabolic syndrome. The observation phase lasted from 2006 to 2021.

During this period, 2271 cases of cancer were identified. The researchers found that participants with signs of metabolic syndrome had a 1.3, 2.1, 3.3, 4.5, 2.5 and 1.6 times higher risk of developing breast, endometrial, kidney, colon and liver cancers respectively.

Scientists believe that preventing and treating metabolic syndrome can reduce the likelihood of developing various forms of cancer. However, the precise mechanisms explaining the relationship between metabolic disorders and cancer require further study.
