Russian President Vladimir Putin, by his decree, named the Nadym airport in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug after Viktor Chernomyrdin. The decree on naming a Russian politician and statesman has been published on the official portal of legal information.
Viktor Chernomyrdin was appointed Minister of the Gas Industry of the USSR in 1985, and in 1989 he headed the Gazprom concern. From May 1992, he became Deputy Prime Minister for the Fuel and Energy Complex, and from the end of that year until 1998, he headed the Russian government.
The city-forming enterprise of Nadym is Gazprom Dobycha Nadym, which, according to Wikipedia, accounts for about 11% of the gas produced in our country.
The airport is located 9 km southeast of Nadym. One of the oldest airports in Russia now also serves large passenger liners.
