Musicians of the Russian Guard will be awarded a medal named after the author of “Farewell of the Slav”

The new official heraldic sign is the commemorative medal of the Federal Service of the National Guard of Russia “Military conductor and composer V.I. Agapkin,” plans to establish the Russian Guard. The medal named after the famous composer is planned to be awarded to military personnel and workers of military orchestra services and military bands of the Russian Guard troops who have served for at least 5 years, as well as citizens transferred to the reserve or retired. They will be awarded for their contribution to the development and preservation of professional military brass (symphony) bands and for helping to expand their repertoire.

In addition, military personnel and employees of the Academic Song and Dance Ensemble of the Russian Guard, song and dance ensembles of the districts and Dzerzhinsky division, officers’ houses, clubs of military units, the Central and other museums of the Russian Guard, who have served for at least 10 years, will be able to apply for a musical award. They will be given an award for excellent performance and merit shown in professional, service and creative activities.

Vasily Ivanovich Agapkin began his musical career as a teenager, joining the orchestra of the 308th reserve Tsarevsky battalion stationed in Astrakhan. By the age of 14 he was a top clarinet soloist. During his musical career, he wrote dozens of musical works, but what made him famous was the march “Farewell of the Slavic Woman,” which he created in 1912. The march quickly became popular. In 1941, the Red Army soldiers went to the front to the sounds of this march. During the famous parade on Red Square on November 7, 1941, the composer himself conducted the orchestra.
