The Ombudsman regarded the use of criminal repression against him as an encroachment on freedom of speech. In addition, this, according to Moskalkova, is a violation of Latvia’s international obligations in the field of protecting the rights of journalists.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is asked to pay attention to this egregious fact. It is necessary to “take measures within the framework of its mandate to protect the rights of Marat Kasem,” the text of the appeal published in the telegram channel of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation notes.
The journalist was detained in Riga the day before by the Latvian State Security Service, the local court chose a measure of restraint in the form of arrest for him.
Kasem is reportedly charged with two criminal charges, including spying for Russia. Under Latvian law, this can result in a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
