The boom of street trading in Russia began with the decree of President Boris Yeltsin on January 29, 1992, legalizing it “in any convenient places.” By 1998, there were about 250 markets of various profiles in Moscow.

Soon the authorities decided to streamline this business. In 2001 one of the first was closed Bird Market in Kalitniki, who led his story from the merchants of “yard birds and songbirds” on Okhotny Ryad. The legendary “Bird” has been located here since the 20s of the last century, however, “due to the poor sanitary and fire safety condition”, the Moscow government decided to move it to the territory of the “Sadovod” market. In 2016, a high-rise building was erected on the site of the once main metropolitan area for the sale of domestic and exotic animals.

In the same year, a decree of the Moscow government banned the sale of audio and video products from stalls and machines, which led to the closure of the spontaneous market for discs and cassettes near the Gorbunov Palace of Culture in Filevsky Park – the legendary “Humpbacks”. The hawkers tried to protest, but to no avail. Soon the market moved to the nearby workshops of the former Moscow television plant “Rubin” and opened there under the new name “Gorbushkin Dvor”, becoming one of the largest electronics sales sites in Russia.

In December 2001, Mayor Yuri Luzhkov also decided to close fairs on the territory of sports complexes. On January 1, 2003, seven clothing markets located near the Dynamo, Luzhniki and CSKA stadiums stopped working. The owners of the latter tried to delay the inevitable, but the city authorities threatened to “set up cordons”. After some time, two new shopping centers appeared in the immediate vicinity of the sports complex – “Start” and “Palladium”. The market, located near the stadium “Dynamo” in Petrovsky Park, moved to the territory of the Stankolit plant.

Moved outside the sports complex and market at Luzhniki, which in the 90s became a symbol of spontaneous trade. True, he moved not far away – to pavilions near the Sportivnaya metro station. Finally, the “Puddle” was liquidated only eight years later, when the prosecutor’s office discovered a “bouquet of gray schemes” on the trading floor: counterfeit, violations of land and migration laws, as well as fire safety standards. The plans of the city authorities included the construction of facilities in its place, including for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

At the same time, the Moscow government decided to liquidate one of the oldest central markets of the capital – Palashevsky in the Sytinsky impasse. The land plot was transferred to the Inteko investment and construction corporation, which at that time belonged to the wife of Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, Elena Baturina, who planned the construction of a club house on it. True, the construction was delayed, and the residential complex was commissioned only in 2011.

On February 23, 2006, a collapse occurred Basmanny marketlocated on Baumanskaya street since 1975. At the time of construction, its round metal roof, designed by Nodar Kancheli, the architect of the infamous Transvaal Park, was considered innovative, but 30 years later, on a fateful winter morning, it buried 68 people under it. In April, the market was closed and all employees were laid off. It was reported about plans to build a shopping center, a museum and a library in its place, but in 2019 the construction of a house began there under the renovation program (commissioned in 2022).

In 2006, the State Duma passed a law according to which, from January 1, 2013, all markets should be located in permanent buildings. The only exception is agricultural. The owners were among the first to start the reconstruction Savelovsky market electronics and radio engineering, opened near the railway station of the same name in 1998. In 2012, the malls moved to a new complex.

June 29, 2009 was first closed, and then completely liquidated Cherkizovsky market, controlled by the structures of businessman Telman Ismailov. Before that, the security forces discovered a batch of life-threatening children’s goods at the largest clothing fair in Russia, and then-Prime Minister Vladimir Putin demanded that the fight against smuggling be intensified. According to various estimates, the annual turnover of “Cherkizon” reached 115-25 billion. The market occupied more than 200 hectares, there were cafes, hairdressers, rooming houses, exchange offices, a casino and even a brothel on its territory.

After the closure of Cherkizon, many merchants moved to the territory “Emerala” – the second largest wholesale and clothing fair in the capital (since 1999 it has been located at 25 km of the Moscow Ring Road). However, local residents met the expansion of the market with hostility. A year later, “Emeral” was also closed due to violations. Shortly before this, the fair was inspected by the new mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, who compared it with “the poorest provinces of India.” GC “Kyiv Ploshchad” intended to build a warehouse complex or an amusement park there, but abandoned these plans in favor of residential development. In November 2022, Moskomstroyinvest announced that almost 850 thousand square meters of housing would be built on the site of the market.

Failed to repurpose in a timely manner and Tushino market, who has been working since 1991 on the Volokolamsk highway. In 2012, representatives of the SZAO prefecture took the initiative to liquidate it, proposing to open a fair for the sale of agricultural products with an extended opening hours there. Previously, the activities of the trading platform have repeatedly caused criticism from veterinarians, including due to the lack of the necessary conditions for cutting meat and conducting a sanitary examination.

In 2010, the prefect of the SAO Vladimir Silkin ordered the elimination of five “wild” markets in the district. Got under cleaning and fair near the Timiryazevskaya metro stationlocated there since 1995. The city authorities claimed that the malls operate on “bird rights”, so in July 2013 they were demolished. On the site of the market, it was planned to build a car interchange and an intercepting parking lot.

demolition attempts Matveevsky market in the west of Moscow have been undertaken repeatedly. In the summer of 2013, the city authorities had a good reason: during the arrest of the alleged rapist in the market, an operative was beaten by a mob. The incident caused a wide resonance, and officials remembered that the fair should move to a permanent building or close. First, the trading floor was cleared of open counters, and in the spring of 2017, all other structures were eliminated. Only the pavilion of the “social fair” survived.
