Moscow schoolgirls have developed a unique water purification method

Vazire Ismoilova and Daria Slavnova, students of the tenth medical class of the Moscow school No. 2065, together with the supervisor, developed a new method of water purification. To do this, they used an analogue of the mineral ivanyukite artificially created at the Kola Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which consists of titanium oxide and silicon.
The “prehistory” of the discovery turned out to be quite vital. In New Moscow, where school No. 2065 is located, the organoleptic properties of water in the Likovo River have deteriorated in recent years: these are the properties that are evaluated by the human senses, in particular taste, smell, color, appearance, consistency. Lyubov Obolenskaya, a chemistry teacher in the medical class, where tenth-graders study, suggested that the girls conduct an experiment and purify water from the river using a synthesized analogue of the mineral ivanyukite. The results of the experiments showed that after such purification, the water from the polluted river became clean and drinkable.
As Lyubov Obolenskaya explained, titanium dioxide nanoparticles are successfully used in the world to purify water and air, but not everything is so simple with water. Harmful substances dissolved in it are well adsorbed and destroyed under the influence of light, however, titanium dioxide itself, after it has fulfilled its function, is rather difficult to remove from the surface of the water. The use of a magnetic component, in the role of which the ivanukite particles acted, made it possible to remove various pollutants from the surface of the water.
“Schoolgirls conducted an experiment in which they carried out an “upgrade” of contaminated particles, adding to each a core of Fe3O4 nanomagnetite,” the teacher explained. – Experiments carried out on a sufficiently large volume of water – up to 5 liters – showed that the researchers were thinking in the right direction: after cleaning, the water tasted normal, its turbidity decreased.
