The Moscow City Court recognized as legal the extension of the arrest of theater director Yevgenia Berkovich and playwright Svetlana Petriychuk, who are defendants in a criminal case to justify terrorism. They will be in jail until at least September 10.
“Leave the decision of the court of first instance unchanged, and leave the complaints of the defense without satisfaction,” the judge noted, announcing the decision (quote from TASS).
The initiation of a criminal case against Evgenia Berkovich and Svetlana Petriychuk became known on May 4. The reason was the play “Finist Yasny Sokol” about Russian women who were recruited online by radical Islamists to travel to Syria. According to the results of the examination, the production revealed the glorification of ISIS (“Islamic State”, a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation) and the ideology of radical feminism.
Svetlana Petriychuk and Yevgeny Berkovich blame do not recognize. The defense in court insisted that the case file refers to a reading of the play posted on YouTube, and not to a full-fledged production. Under the article on justifying terrorism, the defendants face up to seven years in prison.
